Rabbit Housing

When owning a rabbit, you should have the correct housing for them. There should be saw dust at the bottom of the crate for the rabbit to do their business on. The crate should be changed at least once a week and add fresh saw dust. You can also use granulated paper, hay, or straw. The rabbit must have enough space to move and have a bowl where the food is and a water bottle. The bowl must be heavy enough for the rabbit not to be able to pick the dish up and throw it. The crate must have a roof and be rabbit-escape proof.

Original Usage: Farm dog, cattle and sheep herder.

Fur color selection: Sable pattern in colors ranging from grey to red, with darker shades on the back, neck, and sides and has light harness markings.

Grooming: Swedish Vallhund's need to be brushed twice a week. Clip their their nails monthly. Brush their teeth daily to prevent plaque. Clean ears and eyes weekly.

Weight: Female: 30 to 32 pounds

               Male: 33 to 35 pounds

Personality: Swedish Vallhund's are alert to any sound or activity and are eager to please.

Trainabilty: Hard. To make the training process a little easier, use clicker training and treat as their reward to listening to you.

Activity Level: Swedish Vallhund's are very energetic. They need plenty of exercise.

Known Health Problems: Retinopathy and hip dysplasia.

Are Swedish Vallhund's good with children? Yes especially with older children when they are trained.

Are Swedish Vallhund's good with other pet? Yes. If trained and socialized with them.

Shuntz Disease

Shuntz disease is a type of liver disease that is cause by a poor diet. It allows blood to bypass the liver, which is not cleaned by the bodily filters. The blood moves around the liver instead of inside the liver. Sometimes, dental disease can cause increased liver enzymes activities. They have to be put on specific diets unlike other liver diseases. The dog has to be on a low protein diet, preferably vegetarian diets. You must avoid foods that contain soy, cauliflower, spinach, asparagus, peas, mushrooms, and beans. Supplements such as SAM-e (S-denosyl-L-Methionine). SAM-e is best to be taken on an empty stomach, along with vitamin B.

This disease is serious. There is a chance that may have to have surgery

Symptoms: body swaying, poor growth, seizures, pushing their head up against something for no reason whatsoever, strange behavior mostly after eating. This disease does affect the blood flow to the brain.

Choosing The Perfect Rabbit for You

Are you thinking of purchasing a rabbit? Do you know anything about them?

 Rabbits are very easy to care for, but first you have to choose the best rabbit. You never want to adopt a rabbit that appears to be bald, has cloudy eyes, or has discharge on the nose. When you see these characteristics, you know that there must be something wrong. They could be the start stages of myxomatosis or "snuffles." It is also a sign that the rabbit was in a unclean environment. Having a clean environment for your rabbit is the key to a healthy pet.

You must know whether you want a rabbit that has long or short fur. You need to brush the rabbit who has longer hair. There several sizes, colors, and patterns of the rabbits to choose from.

The smallest are the Dwarf breeds. Next comes medium and then large breeds. The smaller the rabbit, the easier to take care for. You can purchase rabbits from pet stores where cats and dogs are found.

Pet of the Day: In Need Of Adoption: PeekABoo the Keeshond Mix

Peekaboo?!?! Yup, that's me. That's cause I "peek" out from whatever I can find to hide under, and if anyone says anything I think its "boo" and I run back and hide again. People are so incredibly BIG! Geez, you just gotta see it from my perspective down here on the floor. When I look up all I see is this HUGE long set of legs. WOW! But I'm learning. Foster mom is giving me treats whenever I come up to her and I really, really like that game!
Nanna told me she is what people call a "designer dog." Seems like maybe that's what I am too? Not real sure cause I'm lots smaller than Nanna. I come from the same place as Nanna (so read her story if you want to know my "roots") but I don't think that is what she means by a "designer" dog. Bottom line, I guess is I don't really know what I am.

But maybe that doesn't matter. That's at least what Quigley tells me. He says that we live in America and its not supposed to matter. We got as many doggie rights as the next dog. Sounds good to me, so I guess I'll go with that.

So like Nanna and Quig, I'm learning all about "houses" and stairs, and things like that. A bit scary, but kinda interesting too. That's why I keep peeking --- its so much fun to discover new things. Have to say, though, I'm not as fast as Nanna or Quig --- took me several hours to figure out the stair thingee. But that's ok, I'll bet I'm better at other things. Just gotta keep an eye out for those other things.

I have no problem with the other doggies or even the cats. And I do love the big yard that I can run and play in. Don't understand about housebreaking or doggie doors, but all in good time. That's my motto, ya can't build Rome in no day, as they say.

What do you think? Want a wee doggie that's a bit like a cat but fun like a dog? That could be me! Why not come and see.

Mac was brought to the shelter on 12/9/10 after having been found as a stray in Hillsdale, Indiana. When he arrived, he weighed 10.4 pounds and was about 3 years old. Mac is current on vaccinations. He is listed as special needs because he tests positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV); consequently, we would prefer he be adopted into a home with a family that has been educated about FIV. He tested negative for Feline Leukemia Virus. As with most of our cats, Mac must be adopted as an indoor cat only.
Unless otherwise stated, the adoption fee for one of our cats is $65 if the cat has already been spayed or neutered. For cats that have not yet been spayed or neutered, the adoption fee is $40 plus a surgery deposit of $50. The surgery deposit will be refunded once the shelter receives proof of the completion of the spay or neuter surgery.

Stanley was brought to the shelter after his owner in Terre Haute had surgery and could no longer care for him. He is a gorgeous Blue Point Snowshoe Siamese/Tabby and he is approximately 10 1/2 yrs. od. He weighs 9.8 pounds and he is litter-box trained. Pet of the Day: In Need For Adoption: Abby the Cocker Spaniel/beagle mix

03/21/10 - Abby and Shadow were brought into the shelter as strays from the Sandytown/Klondike area on 03/21/10. They are very bonded and really enjoy the company of one another. Abby has a golden and white coat and appears to be a Cocker Spaniel/Beagle mix. She is approximately five years old and is very overweight. We will be adjusting her diet to try to help her get to a healthy size. Abby has already been spayed, is up-to-date on her vaccinations, and has been wormed.  She is great with other dogs and she is housebroken. Abby and Shadow are quite bonded, and we would like to keep these two dogs together.  A person who likes to go for long walks would be a perfect match for Abby. Since she is over 5 years old, her adoption fee is only $10.

"One Money Bar", aka Taylor, is a 9 year old registered AQHA mare whose former owner tied her to a tree and watched her starve.

*UPDATE 06/10: Taylor has just started RIDING!!! we are so excited for her. See her youtube video (same video as posted here) for her very first time with a rider in her saddle. "UPDATE 3/10: Taylor has come up to a healthy weight and is doing VERY well! We have nearly completed recovering her hooves from the damage due to the abuse and the nutritional deficiencies. She is a sweet, beautiful mare who deserves a loving home. She is working well in the roundpen and has been saddled several times, but not yet bridled or ridden.
